Neoepiblema was named by Ameghino (1889). Its type is Epiblema horridula. It was considered monophyletic by Rasia and Candela (2018).

It was assigned to Eryomyidae by Ameghino (1889); and to Neoepiblemidae by Kraglievich (1926) and Rasia and Candela (2018).
