Polysolenia was named by Ehrenberg (1872) [Sepkoski's age data: K Sn R Sepkoski's reference number: 2]. It is extant. Its type is Polysolenia setosa.

It was assigned to Collosphaeridae by De Wever et al. (2001); and to Spumellaria by Sepkoski (2002).
