Gonionotites scapulatus was named by Tozer (1994). Its type specimen is GSC 72335 and is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Near Locality XI, Pardonet Hill (GSC 9640), which is in the Lacian of horizon the Pardonet Formation Canada.
