Taxonomy
Gigarton louisi was named by Hooker and Russell (2012). Its type specimen is MNHN.F.CR-93-L, a tooth (LM2), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Cernay, which is in a Thanetian terrestrial horizon in the Conglomérat de Cernay Formation of France.
