Taxonomy
Thalassochelys testei was named by Bergounioux (1956). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Metlaoui, which is in a Ypresian coastal phosphorite in the Gafsa Phosphates Formation of Tunisia.

It was recombined as Caretta testei by Moody and Buffetaut (1981).
