Dekayia was named by Milne-Edwards and Haime (1851). Its type is Dekayia aspera.

It was assigned to Trepostomida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Heterotrypidae by Bassler (1953), Ernst and Nakrem (2012) and Jiménez-Sánchez et al. (2015).
