Diagnosis
ReferenceDiagnosis
M. I. A. Ibrahim 2002Afropollis as emended herein, includes forms with monosulcoid aperture, in addition to inaperturate (cryptaperturate) and zonasulculate grains, as per the original diagnosis by Doyle et al. (1982, p. 44). The exine is reticulate semitectate, consisting of an open network separated from the nexine over most of the surface of the grain, the muri being columellate or acolumellate. The monosulcate genus Brenneripollis Juhász and Góczán (1985), differs from monosulcoid Afropollis by having a coarse, loose reticulum not supported by collumellae, and by its typically bilateral symmetry. Species of Retimonocolpites Pierce 1961, emend. Juhász and Góczán 1985, are distinguished from Afropollis by possessing an irregular reticulum with sexine often tightly connected to the inner nexine via prominent columellae.
