Diplodus tenuis was named by Woodward (1889). Its type specimen is BMNH P.3026, a set of teeth, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Carluke, Lanarkshire (BMNH), which is in a Pennsylvanian terrestrial horizon in the United Kingdom.
