Diplodus compressus was named by Newberry (1856). It is not extant.

It was recombined as Didymodus compressus by Cope (1883) and Cope (1884); it was recombined as Dittodus compressus by Hay (1902); it was recombined as Pleuracanthus compressus by Eastman (1903); it was recombined as Orthacanthus compressus by Johnson (1999).
