Climaxodus linguaeformis was named by Atthey (1868). Its type specimen is BMNH 41211, a tooth, and it is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Newcastle-upon-Tyne (BMNH), which is in a Kasimovian/Moscovian marine horizon in the United Kingdom.
