Protosuchia was named by Mook (1934).
It was reranked as the infraorder Protosuchia by Walker (1970); it was considered an invalid subgroup of Crocodyliformes by Brochu et al. (2009); it was reranked as the unranked clade Protosuchia by Wu and Sues (1996) and Ruebenstahl et al. (2022).
It was assigned to Crocodilia by Roxo (1937), Kuhn (1946), Huene (1954), Haughton and Brink (1954) and Charig (1967); to Crocodylia by Walker (1970); to Crocodylia by Kuhn (1966), Haubold (1971), Haubold (1974) and Carroll (1988); to Crocodilomorphi by Efimov (1996); and to Crocodyliformes by Wu and Sues (1996), Ortega et al. (2000), Fiorelli and Calvo (2008) and Ruebenstahl et al. (2022).
