Gobiidae was named by Bonaparte (1832) [also credited to Cuvier, 1816 or Regan, 1911]. It is extant.
It was assigned to Gobioidea by Jordan (1963); to Perciformes by Danil'chenko (1980) and Böhme (2010); to Gobioidei by Fierstine et al. (2012), Betancur et al. (2013) and Lin et al. (2017); and to Gobiiformes by Nelson et al. (2016), Cirilli et al. (2016), Ebersole et al. (2019) and Agiadi et al. (2020).
