Monticulipora was named by d'Orbigny (1850). Its type is Monticulipora mammulata. It is the type genus of Monticuliporidae.
It was assigned to Trepostomida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Monticuliporidae by Bassler (1911), Bassler (1953), Adamcyzk and Pachut (2013), Jiménez-Sánchez et al. (2015) and Ernst et al. (2017).
