Talantodiscus mackayi was named by Begg and Grant-Mackie (2003). Its type specimen is OU 16436 and is a mold. Its type locality is ERF 548, State Highway 96, Catlins (H46/f8701), which is in a Ladinian marine siliciclastic in New Zealand.
