Pleurotomaria karetai was named by Begg and Grant-Mackie (2003). Its type specimen is OU 16440 and is a mold. Its type locality is JDC 3736WD, Wether Hill Station, Ohai (D45/f176), which is in an Anisian marine siliciclastic in New Zealand.
