Terebratula pyriformis was named by Suess (1854).

It was corrected as Terebratula piriformis by Bittner (1912); it was misspelled as Terebratula piriformis by Smith (1927); it was recombined as Rhaetina pyriformis by Pearson (1977), Iordan (1993), Siblik (1998), Siblik and Bryda (2005) and Siblík et al. (2010).
