Taxonomy
Scylliodus antiquus was named by Agassiz (1843).

It was recombined as Scyllium antiquum by Woodward (1889) and Dalinkevičius (1935); it was recombined as Scyliorhinus antiquus by Cappetta (1977), Müller and Diedrich (1991), Halter (1995) and Guinot et al. (2013).
