Hemiechinus was named by Fitzinger (1866). It is extant. It was considered paraphyletic by Gould (1995).

It was assigned to Erinaceinae by Gould (1995); to Erinaceini by Van Valen (1967) and McKenna and Bell (1997); and to Erinaceomorpha by Silcox et al. (2010).
