Synonyms
  • Idiochelys wagneri was named by Meyer (1846). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Compsognathus type, Kapfelberg (BSP), which is in a Kimmeridgian lagoonal/restricted shallow subtidal limestone in the Painten Formation of Germany.

It was misspelled as Idiochelys wagnerorum by Rütimeyer (1873); it was synonymized subjectively with Idiochelys fitzingeri by Wagner (1853) and Anquetin et al. (2017).
  • Chelonemys ovata was named by Jourdan (1862). Its type specimen is MHNL 20015634, a partial skeleton (a near-complete individual, including carapace, skull, cervical series, partial limbs, and tail), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Cerin, Jura, which is in a Kimmeridgian terrestrial horizon in France.

It was synonymized subjectively with Idiochelys fitzingeri by Anquetin et al. (2017).
  • Chelonemys plana was named by Jourdan (1862). Its type specimen is MHNL 20015635, a partial skeleton (a near-complete individual consisting of plastron, carapace, skull, complete forelimbs, left hind limb, and tail), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Cerin, Jura, which is in a Kimmeridgian terrestrial horizon in France.

It was synonymized subjectively with Idiochelys fitzingeri by Anquetin et al. (2017).

Diagnosis
ReferenceDiagnosis
J. Anquetin et al. 2017Idiochelys fitzingeri differs from all other “eurysternids” in the presence of an oval to rounded carapace, a broad nuchal that forms a deep and narrow nuchal notch, a reduction of the neural series, the retention of moderate costo-peripheral fontanelles, a shallow pygal notch, wide vertebrals, sutural contact of the hypoplastra with the anterior plastral elements in adults, a slightly wider than long hyoplastron, a central plastral fontanelle that is wider than long in juveniles and absent in adults, xiphiplastra about as wide as long, a reduced manual phalangeal formula (2-2-3-3-3), and a long tail.
