Taxonomy
Edopoidea was named by Romer (1945) [Phylogenetic definition (from Schoch 2013): The most inclusive clade containing Edops craigi but not Mastodonsaurus giganteus. ]. It was considered monophyletic by Schoch (2013).

It was corrected as Edopsoidea by Haubold (1971) and Haubold (1974); it was reranked as the unranked clade Edopoidea by Sequeira (2004), Sidor et al. (2005) and Schoch (2013); it was corrected as Edopoidea by Schoch and Milner (2014).

It was assigned to Rhachitomi by Carroll (1967); to Temnospondyli by Haubold (1971); to Temnospondylia by Haubold (1974); to Temnospondyli by Carroll (1988) and Sidor et al. (2005); and to Temnospondyli by Sequeira (2004), Schoch (2013) and Schoch and Milner (2014).
