Chasmatopora was named by Eichwald (1860). Its type is Retepora tenella.

It was synonymized subjectively with Subretepora by Bassler (1953).

It was assigned to Fenestrata by Sepkoski (2002); and to Phylloporinidae by Bassler (1911) and Jiménez-Sánchez (2009).
