Parrotia brevipetiolata was named by Meyer and Manchester (1997) [Holotype UF00250-010360. Paratypes: UF00250-010361, UF00250-010362, UF00250-010363, UF00250-010364, UF00250-010365, UF00250-010366, UF00250-010367, UF00250-010404, UF00250-010405, UF00250-010406, UF00250-010407.]. Its type specimen is UF00250-010360, a leaf, and it is a compression fossil.
