Nothofagidites hystricosphaeroides was named by Menendez and Caccavari (1975). It is considered to be a form taxon. Its type specimen is BAPB Prep. pal. N° 533, a non-seed repro (Pollen grain), and it is a 3D fossil preserving soft parts.

La exina con un espesor de 0.5 (0.6) 0.7 µ, se presenta cubierta de espinas flexibles de 0.5-0.9 µ de diámetro basal y 1-1-4 µ de largo, con una densidad de 48.6 (50) 72.9 µ en 100 µ².
