E. Gheerbrant and H. Astibia 2012 | Primitive eutherians most closely related to “Zhelestidae” in the robust dental morphology with special- ized crushing-grinding function as illustrated by the cusps inflated at the base, developed horizontal wear pattern, lower molars with large and wide talonid, low trigonid, and large hypoconid, upper molars with protocone inflated mesio-distally and large protofossa. They also share with “Zhelestidae”: lower molars with the paraconid more or less lingually situated and hypoconulid more or less appressed to entoconid; upper molars and dP5/ with stylar shelf and stylar cusps reduced, especially in front of the paracone (parastylar lobe absent), preparacrista reduced, paracone and metacone deeply separated, conules close to paracone and metacone, paracingulum reduced (narrow). Differs from most known “Zhelestidae”, and in particular Late Cretaceous Asian taxa, by (p: primitive; d: derived):
– Lower molars: trigonid moderately compressed mesio-distally (but similar to the most primitive Asian zhelestids) (p); paraconid small, reduced transversely (d); protoconid much larger and higher than metaconid, being the predominant cusp of the trigonid (d); weak exodaenodonty (d); labial profile of protoconid slightly concave (d); absence of postcingulid (p ?). – Upper molars and dP5/: preparacrista, postmetacrista, stylar shelf and stylar cusps (e.g., stylocone, parastyle) noticeably reduced (d); paracone and paraconule shifted labially with respect to metacone and metaconule (d); paracone and metacone remarkably divergent (d); conules with reduced internal crest; protocone low and raised vertically (p); and lingual cingulum absent (p). |
