Taxonomy
Sphenacanthus riorastoensis was named by Pauliv et al. (2012). Its type specimen is MCN.P.440, an osteoderm (fin spine), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Jacarezinho Municipality, which is in a Capitanian lacustrine horizon in the Rio do Rasto Formation of Brazil.
