Asterias (Astropecten) recta was named by McCoy (1848).

It was recombined as Astropecten rectus by Morris (1854), Dujardin and Hupé (1862), Wright (1863), Phillips (1875), Wright (1880), Quenstedt (1885), Woods (1891), Fritel (1902) and Mercier (1935); it was recombined as Crenaster rectus by Pictet (1857); it was recombined as Archastropecten rectus by Hess (1955); it was recombined as Pentasteria (Pentasteria) rectus by Spencer and Wright (1966); it was recombined as Pentasteria recta by Hüne and Hüne (2008).
