Ponera succinea was named by Mayr (1868). Its type specimen is No. 640/10 277, an exoskeleton, and it is an inclusion in amber.

It was recombined as Euponera succinea by Wheeler (1915); it was recombined as Pachycondyla succinea by Dlussky (2009) and Bolton (2012).
