Ponera succinea was named by Mayr (1868). Its type specimen is No. 640/10 277, an exoskeleton, and it is an inclusion in amber.

It was recombined as Euponera succinea by Wheeler (1915); it was recombined as Pachycondyla succinea by Spahr (1987), Dlussky (2009) and Schmidt and Shattuck (2014).
