Taxonomy
Stigmomyrmex robustus was named by Mayr (1868). Its type specimen is B 18605, an exoskeleton, and it is an inclusion in amber. It is the type species of Stiphromyrmex.

It was recombined as Stiphromyrmex robustus by Wheeler (1915), Bolton (2012) and Radchenko and Dlussky (2017).
