Taxonomy
Bombus atavus was named by Heer (1867). It is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Oeningen (unspecified collection), which is in a Sarmatian crater lake limestone in the Upper Freshwater-Molasse Formation of Germany.
It was recombined as Xylocopa atavus by Cockerell (1909).
