Phillipsia cracoensis was named by Reed (1899).
It was recombined as Cyrtosymbole cracoensis by Reed (1943); it was recombined as Archegonus cracoensis by Osmolska (1968); it was recombined as Cyrtoproetus (Cyrtoproetus) cracoensis by Hahn et al. (2001); it was recombined as Cyrtoproetus cracoensis by Weller (1959), Hahn and Hahn (1969) and Rak et al. (2012).
