Discothyrea gigas was named by de Andrade (1998). Its type specimen is Poinar H-10-178-A, an exoskeleton, and it is an inclusion in amber. Its type locality is Dominican amber (Poinar coll), which is in a Burdigalian/Langhian terrestrial amber in the Dominican Republic.
