Elater werneri was named by Giebel (1856). It is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Vale of Aylesbury, which is in a Berriasian lagoonal/restricted shallow subtidal horizon in the United Kingdom.

It was recombined as Biadelater werneri by Handlirsch (1906).
