Crypticus ungeri was named by Giebel (1856). It is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Swanage/Purbeck (DORCM/BMNH) [C. Willcox Collection], which is in a Berriasian fluvial-lacustrine limestone in the United Kingdom.
It was recombined as Prosthenostictus ungeri by Handlirsch (1906).
