Leptothorax caritatis was named by de Andrade (1999). It is an inclusion in amber. Its type locality is Dominican amber, La Toca (MCZ coll), which is in a Burdigalian/Langhian terrestrial amber in the Dominican Republic.
It was recombined as Nesomyrmex caritatis by Bolton (2012).
