Acanthocella was named by Canu and Bassler (1917) [Sepkoski's age data: T Ol-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 1260]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Cribrilinidae by Bassler (1953) and Brown (1958); and to Cheilostomata by Sepkoski (2002).
