Beania was named by Johnston (1840) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-m R Sepkoski's reference number: 602,1066]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Beaniidae.

It was assigned to Beaniidae by Bassler (1953); to Bicellariellidae by Cheetham (1972); and to Cheilostomata by Sepkoski (2002).
