Gigantotermes excelsus

Taxonomy
Apochrysa excelsa was named by Oppenheim (1888). Its type specimen is JME AS I 1028 1095-1 Nr 1, an exoskeleton, and it is an impression. Its type locality is Eichstätt, Solnhofen (Jura Museum JME and Kümpel collection), which is in a Tithonian lagoonal/restricted shallow subtidal lime mudstone in the Solnhofen Formation of Germany.

It was considered a nomen nudum by Hagen (1862); it was recombined as Gigantotermes excelsus by Haase (1890), Handlirsch (1906), Carpenter (1932), Martynova (1949) and Ponomarenko (2003).
