Protovallupus was named by Pessagno and MacLeod (1987) [Sepkoski's age data: J Kimm-l J Tith-u]. Its type is Protovallupus vaticinus.
It was assigned to Pantanelliidae by Kiessling (1995); to Vallupinae by De Wever et al. (2001); and to Spumellaria by Sepkoski (2002).
