Rhinocarididae was named by Hall and Clarke (1888). Its type is Rhinocaris.

It was assigned to Rhinocarina by Brooks et al. (1969); to Archaeostraca by Schram (1979); and to Rhinocaridina by Rode and Lieberman (2002).
