Dipterus valenciennesi was named by Sedgwick and Murchison (1828). It is a 3D body fossil.

It was synonymized subjectively with Catopterus analis by Agassiz (1833); it was synonymized subjectively with Dipterus macrolepidotus by Agassiz (1835).
