Herpetopora was named by Lang (1914) [Sepkoski's age data: K Turo T Ol-l]. Its type is Herpetopora anglica.

It was assigned to Electrinidae by Canu and Bassler (1920); to Cheilostomata by Sepkoski (2002); and to Electridae by Bassler (1953), Bock (2006) and Guha (2013).
