Hippopodina was named by Levinsen (1909) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-m-u R Sepkoski's reference number: 1260]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Hippoporinidae by Brown (1952); to Petraliidae by Bassler (1953); to Cheilostomata by Sepkoski (2002); and to Hippopodinidae by Cheetham (1962), Bock (2006) and Di Martino and Taylor (2015).
