Hippoporina was named by Neviani (1895) [Sepkoski's age data: T Dani R Sepkoski's reference number: 1260]. It is extant. Its type is Hippoporina sinus. It is the type genus of Hippoporinidae.
It was assigned to Hippoporinidae by Brown (1952), Bassler (1953), Brown (1956) and Brown (1958); to Schizoporellidae by Cheetham (1962); to Cheilostomata by Sepkoski (2002); and to Bitectiporidae by Gordon et al. (1994), Schmidt (2003), Berning (2006) and Bock (2006).
