Dipterus macrolepidotus was named by Sedgwick and Murchison (1829). Its type specimen is GSM 6462, a skeleton, and it is a 3D body fossil.
It was synonymized subjectively with Catopterus analis by Agassiz (1833); it was recombined as Thursius macrolepidotus by Woodward (1891) and Borgen and Nakrem (2016).
