Trichopseniinae was named by Le Conte and Horn (1883). It is extant.

It was reranked as the tribe Trichopseniini by Bouchard et al. (2011), Yamamoto et al. (2016) and Cai et al. (2017).

It was assigned to Staphylinidae by Kistner (1998); and to Aleocharinae by Bouchard et al. (2011), Yamamoto et al. (2016) and Cai et al. (2017).
