Holocompsa was named by Burmeister (1838). It is extant. It is the type genus of Holocompsini.
It was assigned to Polyphagidae by Gutiérrez and Pérez-Gelabert (2000); to Holocompsinae by Beccaloni (2007); and to Holocompsini by Gorochov (2007) and Han et al. (2024).
