Dolichorhinae was named by Riggs (1912). It was considered paraphyletic by Mihlbachler (2008).

It was reranked as the tribe Dolichorhinini by Mihlbachler (2008); it was corrected as Dolichorhininae by Prothero and Schoch (1989) and Mader (2008).

It was assigned to Brontotheridae by Prothero and Schoch (1989) and Mader (1998); to Brontotheriinae by Mihlbachler (2008); and to Brontotheriidae by Mader (2008).
