Onychocella was named by Jullien (1882) [Sepkoski's age data: K Ceno-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 519]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Onychocellidae.
It was assigned to Cheilostomata by Sepkoski (2002); and to Onychocellidae by Bassler (1953), Brown (1958), Voigt (1981), Gordon and Taylor (1999), Pouyet (2000), Zágoršek and Kroh (2003), Schmidt (2003), Berning (2006), Bock (2006), Di Martino and Taylor (2013), Guha (2013), Gordon and Taylor (2015) and Taylor and Martha (2017).
