Taxonomy
Palaeospinax smithwoodwardi was named by Fraas (1896). Its type specimen is SMNS 7298 and is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Holzmaden (Royal Naturalienkabinet 1887 collection), which is in a Toarcian marine shale in Germany.

It was recombined as Palidiplospinax smithwoodwardi by Klug and Kriwet (2008).
